The sanctuary in the crossfire
Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second‑largest city, became a frontline almost overnight. Trapped between the advancing Russian army and Ukraine’s defenders was Feldman Ecopark – more than a zoo, it was an animal sanctuary and a place of therapy for veterans living with PTSD, children with special needs, and other vulnerable groups.
As bombardment intensified, the dedicated staff realised courage alone could not save the thousands of animals inside. With the help of four young volunteers, they risked their lives to evacuate over 5,000 animals – including lions, tigers, and other predators – to safety over a continuous 71‑day operation.
“This is a film about the victims of war who are usually not seen.”
— Joshua Zeman, filmmaker
