Protecting the People Behind Checkpoint Zoo: Compassion Under Fire

When groups set out to do something extraordinary, the risks they face can be as great as their ambitions. In the early days of the Russian–Ukrainian war, one team of zookeepers and volunteers undertook a mission so daring it defied the odds – and we were there to ensure the people telling that story were covered every step of the way.

Filmmakers documenting the evacuation of animals from Feldman Ecopark
Checkpoint Zoo follows a 71‑day effort to move thousands of animals to safety during the bombardment of Kharkiv.

The sanctuary in the crossfire

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second‑largest city, became a frontline almost overnight. Trapped between the advancing Russian army and Ukraine’s defenders was Feldman Ecopark – more than a zoo, it was an animal sanctuary and a place of therapy for veterans living with PTSD, children with special needs, and other vulnerable groups.

As bombardment intensified, the dedicated staff realised courage alone could not save the thousands of animals inside. With the help of four young volunteers, they risked their lives to evacuate over 5,000 animals – including lions, tigers, and other predators – to safety over a continuous 71‑day operation.

“This is a film about the victims of war who are usually not seen.”

— Joshua Zeman, filmmaker

A story that needed to be told

Award‑winning filmmaker Joshua Zeman, known for immersive documentaries such as Cropsey and The Loneliest Whale, was compelled by this account of compassion under fire. Drawing on frontline footage and material shot by the zookeepers themselves, he shaped Checkpoint Zoo into a gripping account of bravery, resilience, and the best of humanity in the worst of times.

He was joined by experienced producers Zachary Mortensen, Ian Davies, and Torquil Jones, whose combined storytelling expertise ensured the rescue’s urgency and humanity were captured in full.

Festival recognition and global impact

The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2024, earning a nomination for Best Documentary Feature and securing 2nd place in the Audience Award. Its festival journey continued with:

  • Zelda Penzel “Giving Voice to the Voiceless” Award – Hamptons International Film Festival 2024
  • Documentary Achievement Jury Award – Miami Film Festival 2025
  • Desert Views Award and Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature – Palm Springs International Film Festival 2025
  • Audience Favorite (Documentary) – Mill Valley Film Festival 2025

These accolades reflect not only cinematic excellence, but the extraordinary human story at its heart.

Our role: protecting the people

Our focus is simple – we protect people, not things. For the Checkpoint Zoo filmmaking team, that meant putting in place specialist cover designed for high‑risk and unpredictable environments:

  • Personal Accident Insurance – financial security for serious injury or death while on assignment.
  • Life Insurance – reassurance for families and dependants.
  • Kidnap & Ransom (K&R) – expert, discreet support in the event of threats or abduction.
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation & Repatriation – rapid access to care and safe transport home.

“Protecting the people behind the mission is as important as the mission itself.”

Why people‑first cover matters for groups

Projects like Checkpoint Zoo remind us that the most valuable asset is human courage. Whether you are filming, delivering aid, or supporting a community, the risks to your people are real – and those people deserve the reassurance that if the worst happens, they will not face it alone.

Our job is to remove confusion and stress from the insurance process, explain options clearly, and put reliable support in place so your team can get on with the work that matters.
